Nicole Allen is the Textbooks Advocate for the Student PIRGs and director of the Make Textbooks Affordable campaign.  Since 2007, she has led a nationwide effort to address the skyrocketing cost of textbooks through grassroots organizing, research and advocacy.  Under her leadership, the campaign passed federal legislation requiring textbook publishers to disclose price information to faculty and organized more than 2,500 professors to sign a declaration of support for open-source textbooks.  Nicole is nationally recognized as a leading issue expert and has been cited in numerous publications including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education and EDUCAUSE Review.  Prior to assuming her current role, she was an organizer for WashPIRG at the University of Washington, where she led a grassroots effort to pass state-level textbook affordability legislation.  Nicole graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2006, where she studied Philosophy and Mathematics. Tim Anderson is the Chair of the American Medical Student Association's PharmFree Campaign whose mission is to promote evidence-based prescribing, pharmaceutical innovation, and access to medicines as well as on AMSA's AIDS Advocacy Network Steering Committee. Tim is a 4th year medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to medical school he received a bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry and economics and a masters in medical ethics at Case Western which steered him to his passion for examining and working to address disparities in health access, information, and care through campaigns like Open Access and PharmFree.   (06/12) 
 

Goldis Chami is a member of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, and is leading student advocacy for an open access publishing mandate at the University of British Columbia. She also sits on UBC’s Scholarly Communications Steering Committee, which aims to – among other things – increase the quality and impact of UBC’s research and scholarship. Goldis has a B.Sc.in Cell Biology and Genetics and a B.A. in Psychology. She is currently a second year medical student at the University of British Columbia and is involved in research around HIV/AIDS in injection drug users, medical student professionalism, and refugee health. She is also a freelance writer, and writes regularly for The Globe and Mail about medical training and healthcare. (10/11)
 


Sylvia Jons is a graduate student studying Higher Education Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). She was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up in Nebraska. Jons currently has a graduate assistantship with the Educational Administration department, and is on loan to work on research related interests, with the Associate Vice Provost for Global Engagement at the University of Nebraska Central Administration System office - Varner Hall. Jons serves as President of the Graduate Student Association, as a Senator on the Association of Students at the University of Nebraska (ASUN), and as the Executive Matching Chair for the Lincoln International Networking Community (LINC) Leadership team. She also represents UNL students on the International Student and Scholar committee, the Student Affairs Advisory Council, ASUN Academic Committee, and the UNL Graduate Council. Her scholarly interests include International Comparative Education, the Global Engagement of Universities, International Educational Administration, International Policy and Analysis, First-Generation College Students, Academic and Student Affairs, and Cross-National Education Studies. Adi Kamdar is a senior at Yale University, where he is majoring in History of Science. He’s a board member of the international chapter-based advocacy group Students for Free Culture, of which he started the Yale chapter a few years ago. Students for Free Culture has put effort into promoting open access on both the national and university scale. In the past, he has interned with the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, the Open Video Alliance, and most recently, the Electronic Frontier Foundation. (06/12)

 

 

Luis Machado is a board member of the European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA), where he works in close proximity with many major European medical organizations.  Currently he is a trainee at the Standing Committee of European Doctors / Comité Permanent des Médecins Européens (CPME), where he represents EMSA in Brussels.  Since the day he enrolled in university, Luis has been involved with student organizations: advocating for students, developing projects, and addressing policies on a local, regional, national, and European level.  In July 2010, Luis finished his Masters in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra -- the oldest and most prestigious University in Portugal.  As the coalition’s first European Steering Committee member, Luis is helping to direct our campaign to raise awareness about Open Access among European students and to expand our European and international membership. Kimalee Phillip is currently the Chairperson of the National Graduate Caucus (NGC) of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). The NGC is Canada's voice for graduate students representing over 70,000 graduate students at 31 different campuses across Canada. Through the Federation's national research department, the Caucus monitors legislative developments as they pertain to graduate students. The research and communications capacity of the Federation also ensures that the voice of graduate students has been heard on issues such as copyright legislation, whistleblower protection, student debt, open access and academic freedom. By working with many allies such as the Canadian Association of University Teachers and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the Caucus has become one of the pre-eminent voices protecting the rights of researchers in Canada. Ali Sternburg is a 2L in the class of 2012 at American University Washington College of Law (WCL).  At WCL, she is President of the Intellectual Property Law Society, Senior Marketing Manager and a Columnist for the Intellectual Property Brief, and a Dean’s Fellow at the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP).  She graduated from Harvard College in 2009 where she studied Government and Music and wrote her senior honors thesis on "Theoretical and Legal Views on U.S. Government Involvement in Musical Creativity Online," and interned at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School.  She is particularly passionate about the original constitutional purpose of copyright and the public domain, fair use of music and other creative art forms, free culture and Creative Commons, and the legal challenges posed by developments of the Internet and technology.  Open access to information is something she values as incredibly important for education and creation, and she is committed to promoting that through the Right to Research Coalition. (10/11)
 

Mary Winn is a fourth year PhD student at the University of California - San Diego in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program.  Prior to attending UCSD, Mary earned her Bachelors of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan in 2005.  After receiving her B.S., Mary went on to study the genetics of blood coagulation at the University of Michigan.  Currently, she conducts research intended to aid in the development of blood-based gene expression diagnostic tools for neuropsychiatric disorders.  At UCSD, Mary is a member of the Graduate Student Association Legislative Concerns Committee, which conducts advocacy efforts on behalf of UCSD students.  In addition, she is the co-founder of the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Student Council, which represents and promotes the academic, social, and professional aims of BMS students. (01/12)
