Members of the 2010-2011 Right to Research Coalition Steering Committee:
(Term expiration dates in parentheses)

Nicole Allen is the Textbooks Advocate for the Student PIRGs and director of the Make Textbooks Affordable campaign. Since 2007, she has led a nationwide effort to address the skyrocketing cost of textbooks through grassroots organizing, research and advocacy. Under her leadership, the campaign passed federal legislation requiring textbook publishers to disclose price information to faculty and organized more than 2,500 professors to sign a declaration of support for open-source textbooks. Nicole is nationally recognized as a leading issue expert and has been cited in numerous publications including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education and EDUCAUSE Review. Prior to assuming her current role, she was an organizer for WashPIRG at the University of Washington, where she led a grassroots effort to pass state-level textbook affordability legislation. Nicole graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2006, where she studied Philosophy and Mathematics. (10/11)

Tim Anderson is the Chair of the American Medical Student Association's PharmFree Campaign whose mission is to promote evidence-based prescribing, pharmaceutical innovation, and access to medicines as well as on AMSA's AIDS Advocacy Network Steering Committee. Tim is a 4th year medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to medical school he received a bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry and economics and a masters in medical ethics at Case Western which steered him to his passion for examining and working to address disparities in health access, information, and care through campaigns like Open Access and PharmFree. Goldis Chami is a member of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, and is leading student advocacy for an open access publishing mandate at the University of British Columbia. She also sits on UBC’s Scholarly Communications Steering Committee, which aims to – among other things – increase the quality and impact of UBC’s research and scholarship. Goldis has a B.Sc.in Cell Biology and Genetics and a B.A. in Psychology. She is currently a second year medical student at the University of British Columbia and is involved in research around HIV/AIDS in injection drug users, medical student professionalism, and refugee health. She is also a freelance writer, and writes regularly for The Globe and Mail about medical training and healthcare. (10/11)

Sylvia Jons is a graduate student studying Higher Education Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). She was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up in Nebraska. Jons currently has a graduate assistantship with the Educational Administration department, and is on loan to work on research related interests, with the Associate Vice Provost for Global Engagement at the University of Nebraska Central Administration System office - Varner Hall. Jons serves as President of the Graduate Student Association, as a Senator on the Association of Students at the University of Nebraska (ASUN), and as the Executive Matching Chair for the Lincoln International Networking Community (LINC) Leadership team. She also represents UNL students on the International Student and Scholar committee, the Student Affairs Advisory Council, ASUN Academic Committee, and the UNL Graduate Council. Her scholarly interests include International Comparative Education, the Global Engagement of Universities, International Educational Administration, International Policy and Analysis, First-Generation College Students, Academic and Student Affairs, and Cross-National Education Studies. Adi Kamdar is a senior at Yale University, where he is majoring in History of Science. He’s a board member of the international chapter-based advocacy group Students for Free Culture, of which he started the Yale chapter a few years ago. Students for Free Culture has put effort into promoting open access on both the national and university scale. In the past, he has interned with the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, the Open Video Alliance, and most recently, the Electronic Frontier Foundation. (06/12)

Luis Machado is a board member of the European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA), where he works in close proximity with many major European medical organizations. Currently he is a trainee at the Standing Committee of European Doctors / Comité Permanent des Médecins Européens (CPME), where he represents EMSA in Brussels. Since the day he enrolled in university, Luis has been involved with student organizations: advocating for students, developing projects, and addressing policies on a local, regional, national, and European level. In July 2010, Luis finished his Masters in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra -- the oldest and most prestigious University in Portugal. As the coalition’s first European Steering Committee member, Luis is helping to direct our campaign to raise awareness about Open Access among European students and to expand our European and international membership. Kimalee Phillip is currently the Chairperson of the National Graduate Caucus (NGC) of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). The NGC is Canada's voice for graduate students representing over 70,000 graduate students at 31 different campuses across Canada. Through the Federation's national research department, the Caucus monitors legislative developments as they pertain to graduate students. The research and communications capacity of the Federation also ensures that the voice of graduate students has been heard on issues such as copyright legislation, whistleblower protection, student debt, open access and academic freedom. By working with many allies such as the Canadian Association of University Teachers and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the Caucus has become one of the pre-eminent voices protecting the rights of researchers in Canada. Nick Shockey is the Director of the Right to Research Coalition and Director of Student Advocacy for the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).

Ali Sternburg is a 2L in the class of 2012 at American University Washington College of Law (WCL). At WCL, she is President of the Intellectual Property Law Society, Senior Marketing Manager and a Columnist for the Intellectual Property Brief, and a Dean’s Fellow at the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP). She graduated from Harvard College in 2009 where she studied Government and Music and wrote her senior honors thesis on "Theoretical and Legal Views on U.S. Government Involvement in Musical Creativity Online," and interned at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School. She is particularly passionate about the original constitutional purpose of copyright and the public domain, fair use of music and other creative art forms, free culture and Creative Commons, and the legal challenges posed by developments of the Internet and technology. Open access to information is something she values as incredibly important for education and creation, and she is committed to promoting that through the Right to Research Coalition. (10/11)

Mary Winn is a fourth year PhD student at the University of California - San Diego in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program. Prior to attending UCSD, Mary earned her Bachelors of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan in 2005. After receiving her B.S., Mary went on to study the genetics of blood coagulation at the University of Michigan. Currently, she conducts research intended to aid in the development of blood-based gene expression diagnostic tools for neuropsychiatric disorders. At UCSD, Mary is a member of the Graduate Student Association Legislative Concerns Committee, which conducts advocacy efforts on behalf of UCSD students. In addition, she is the co-founder of the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Student Council, which represents and promotes the academic, social, and professional aims of BMS students. (01/12)

The Right to Research Coalition is organized around the Student Statement on the Right to Research, which each member endorses upon joining and which defines the scope of the Coalition. As an issue-based organization with a clear and consistent mission and area of action, the Coalition’s governance favors informality and agility, allowing the Coalition’s director to focus the Coalition’s efforts on issues as they arise within the purview of the Student Statement.

Steering Committee

The Right to Research Coalition Steering Committee’s main function is to provide rapid programmatic decision-making support for the Coalition’s director and to help guide the strategic direction of the Coalition. The Steering Committee is populated by members on a voluntary basis and should reflect the membership of the Coalition, both in organizational type and geographic location, to the greatest extent possible. Steering Committee terms are for one year.

The Steering Committee meets by conference call every other month and is in direct communication by e-mail. Steering Committee calls are open to anyone affiliated with the Coalition who would like join, and others may request to attend.

Changes in Program Area

The Right to Research Coalition is bound by the Student Statement on the Right to Research, and as such operates solely within the area governed by the Statement. However, if the need to alter the Coalition's program area should arise, an amendment to the Statement must be passed by each member of the Coalition.

The Student Statement on The Right to Research

Scholarly knowledge is part of the common wealth of humanity.

Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the scholarly literature, despite advances in communications technology. The high cost of academic journals restricts access to knowledge; in some fields, prices can reach $20,000 for a single journal subscription¹ or $30 for an individual article.² Despite these high prices, authors of scholarly articles are not paid for their work. The profits from these publications go solely to the publishers of the journals. A vast amount of research is funded from public sources – yet taxpayers are locked out by the cost of access.

Learning and inquiry are impeded when scholars lack access to fellow researchers’ work, and when students lack access to the work of scholars before them.

At the same time, digital technologies have opened new opportunities for research. New tools facilitate faster discoveries, speed the development of new technologies, and accelerate the progress of science. Patients could have access to the latest medical research, citizens could evaluate scientific information on environmental impacts, and developing countries could apply the most recent scholarship to public health and development efforts.³ But access barriers leave these opportunities under-explored.

Open Access is an alternative to the traditional closed, subscription-access system of scholarly communication. Open Access makes the results of scholarly research available online for free, immediately upon publication, and removes barriers for scholarly and educational re-use.⁴ Entire journals can be open-access, or an author can provide Open Access to an individual article by posting a copy on an openly accessible Web site. All forms of open-access publication depend on rigorous methods of quality control, including peer review.

Open Access has achieved remarkable success to date: more than 4,000 open-access journals are published today;⁵ millions of articles are made available via open-access repositories;⁶and dozens of policies from universities and research funders support Open Access;⁷ but still more needs to be done.

We, the undersigned student organizations, hereby endorse Open Access as the preferred model for scholarly communication, because:

(a) Open Access improves the educational experience. All students, regardless of their institution’s ability to afford subscriptions, should have access to the full scholarly record, whether for assigned reading, research for a term paper, or literature review for a dissertation.

(b) Open Access democratizes access to research. Students from around the world should have full access to the scholarly literature, along with patients looking for medical information and citizens seeking to learn about the environment or other scientific topics.

(c) Open Access advances research. Open Access helps researchers be more productive by facilitating access to the latest studies. Open Access also enables new techniques for computer-assisted research, paving the way for scientific advancements.

(d) Open Access improves the visibility and impact of scholarship. Today's student is tomorrow’s scholar. Recent studies suggest that Open Access articles are downloaded and cited more frequently than articles that are accessible only through subscription.⁸ Open Access fulfills researchers’ professional responsibility to maximize the impact of their research.

We hereby:

Call upon UNIVERSITIES to support Open Access

We believe universities should adopt policies that ensure Open Access to their faculty's research, such as the policies adopted at Harvard University⁹ and Stanford University.¹⁰

Call upon GOVERNMENTS AND RESEARCH FUNDERS to support Open Access

We believe research agencies should adopt policies that ensure Open Access to publicly funded research, such as that of the National Institutes of Health¹¹ and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.¹²

We believe charitable funders likewise should adopt policies that ensure Open Access to their funded research, such as that of Autism Speaks¹³and the Canadian Cancer Society.¹⁴

Call upon RESEARCHERS to support Open Access

We believe researchers should publish in Open Access journals, and/or deposit their peer-reviewed manuscripts in Open Access repositories.¹⁵

Commit to support Open Access in our activities

We will undertake activities, in our membership and on our campuses, to educate students about Open Access and to engage them in efforts supporting Open Access.

About Our Coalition

The Right to Research Coalition was founded by students in the summer of 2009 to promote an open scholarly publishing system based on the belief that no student should be denied access to the articles they need because their institution cannot afford the often high cost of access. Since its launch, the Coalition has grown to represent nearly 7 million students internationally and counts among its members the largest student organizations in both the United States and Canada. While the Coalition currently has a strong base in North America, it is by no means solely a North American organization and is expanding to incorporate student organizations from around the world.

What does our coalition do?

Our work is centered around two major program areas:

To advocate for policies at the campus and national level that promote Open Access by requiring that research results be made freely available in a timely manner;
To educate the next generation of scholars and researchers about Open Access so open publishing becomes the new norm.

Who are our members?

Our Coalition is comprised of a diverse mix of local, national, and international student organizations. What is the Student Statement on the Right to Research?

The Student Statement outlines the principals around which our Coalition is based, namely that the cost of access should not prevent students, researchers, or anyone else from getting access to the academic research they need.
